['hɔːkwʊd], Sir John, in Italien Giovanni Acuto genannt, Condottiere englischer Herkunft, * Sible Hedingham (bei Halstead, County Essex) 1320, ✝ Florenz 16./17. 3. 1394; zog, nachdem er für England am Hundertjährigen Krieg teilgenommen hatte, 1361 mit einer kleinen Truppe nach Italien und kämpfte hier für verschiedene Auftraggeber, besonders für den Papst und für Florenz, dessen militärische Position er in zahlreichen Gefechten festigte. Hawkwood genoss als Kriegsmann und als Berater großes Ansehen in ganz Italien. Ein gemaltes Reiterstandbild Hawkwoods von P. Uccello befindet sich im Dom von Florenz.
